TExES Eligibility Criteria and Test Taking Approval Process
 

Candidates seeking UTPA Department of Mathematics approval to take the TExES Mathematics, Middle School Mathematics 4-8 (TExES field 115) and Secondary Mathematics 8-12 (TExES field 135), State-Level examination based on readiness must

  1. Complete the required courses

    • For Middle School Mathematics: EMAT 2306, EMAT 2307, MMAT 3309, MMAT 3312, MMAT 3313, MMAT 3315, MMAT 3320, and MMAT 3321, ALL with a grade of C or better;

    • For Secondary Mathematics: Calculus Sequence (MATH 1460, MATH 1470, and MATH 2401), Math 2345, Math 3311, Math 4304, ALL with a grade of C or better,

  2. Have a Mathematics GPA on your degree plan ≥ 2.50,

  3. Participate in at least TWO preparation workshops (Present 2 Attendance Certificates),

  4. PASS AT LEAST ONE Department of Mathematics benchmark test (Need at least 70%. Present official Individual Benchmark Test Result Report verifying pass),

  5. Get approval to take the UTPA Middle/Secondary Mathematics TExES Representative Exam (See #6 following). This requires verification of items 1-4 above. Contact the Department of Mathematics TExES Coordinator or representative thereof for evaluation and approval. Bring copy of (1) degree plan, (2) official transcript, (3) workshop attendance certificates, and (4) Individual Benchmark Test Passing Report.   6. PASS the UTPA Middle/Secondary Mathematics Representative Exam. [Requires 240 or greater, Test Result Report form verification needed.] Information concerning UTPA TExES Representative Exams is available from the Office of Teacher Certification and Admission Services, EDCC 1.302.

  7. Get approval to take the TExES Mathematics (135/115) State-Level examination. This requires verification of items 1-6 above. ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION forms must be completed by the Department of Mathematics TExES Coordinator or representative. Eligibility clearances and TExES registration bar coding are then processed by the Office of Teacher Certification and Admission Services, EDCC 1.302 (See #6 above).
