What does PD3 stand for?
PCMI and Districts Partner to Design
Professional Development
Huh?
The Institute for Advanced Study/Park City
Mathematics Institute (PCMI) has a 12-year history of preparing teacher-leaders
to improve their own practice and implement professional development for their
peers. The PD3 program is a Math
and Science Partnership, supported by the National Science Foundation, to
transfer the PCMI mechanism of its professional development model to
three diverse school districts across the nation: Las Cruces, NM, McAllen, TX,
and
Seattle, WA. In this program, a close partnership between PCMI,
school districts, and universities has been formed.
The mission of the PD3 program in McAllen is to create a
mathematics community within the secondary schools of the McAllen Independent
School District that develops and sustains a group of teacher-leaders who design
and implement professional development for their peers. Teacher-leaders
begin by attending two three-week summer programs of PCMI in Park City, Utah
with the goals of
- Learning and doing mathematics,
- Analyzing and refining classroom practice, and
- Becoming resources to colleagues and the profession.
Upon returning from the summer program, the teachers continue
their active work, with the support from the McAllen I.S.D., The University of
Texas - Pan American, and Texas State University, by designing and implementing
professional development for other teachers in the district.
