To enhance instruction and learning, the modularized MATH 1300 course will be supplemented with a one-hour discussion session.  There the modularized MATH 1300 course will meet 4 times a week:  3-hour lectures and 1-hour discussion session.

Times for Discussion Session

In the fall semester 2007, two time periods are offered for modularized MATH 1300:

Time 1:    MWF  8:45-10:35     with   Discussion    9:45 -10:35  either M,W, or F

Time 2:    MWF 10:45-12:35    with   Discussion  11:45-12:35  either M,W, or F

Each of the times above, includes the discussion session.  For example, for Time 1, class meets MWF  8:45-9:35 and discussion session may be held EITHER  Monday, Wednesday, or Friday; thus discussion session is only held once a week and you will be given the time for the discussion session on the first class day.

Collaborative Work

The discussion session will involve students working collaboratively in groups on mathematical problems involving collaborative and relational learning and higher-order thinking skills.  Students will be placed into groups of 3-5 and the discussion session will be lead by the instructor and co-supervised by a student assistant (hereby denoted as SA), an undergraduate student with strong mathematics skills and interest in helping students.

The SA will attend class lectures to understand the concepts that will be the focus of the discussion sessions.  Prior to the discussion session, the SA will meet with the instructor to discuss worksheet problems and therefore be better prepared to explain concepts.

Worksheets

Students will work collaboratively on worksheets containing mathematical problems. Since these problems will be based on relational learning, they will give students the opportunity to develop their critical thinking and analytical skills and to make connections with class material.
